What is Root Canal Therapy
Root canal therapy — also called endodontic treatment — is a procedure used to treat infection or severe damage that has reached the inner chamber of a tooth. Every tooth contains a soft inner layer called the pulp, which houses the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue responsible for the tooth's development. Once a tooth is fully mature, the pulp is no longer essential to its function — the surrounding bone and tissue provide all the nourishment the tooth needs.
When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to deep decay, a cracked tooth, repeated dental procedures on the same tooth, or trauma, it can no longer heal on its own. Left untreated, the infection spreads through the root canals and into the surrounding bone — causing intense pain, abscess formation, and ultimately the loss of the tooth.
Root canal therapy removes the infected or damaged pulp, thoroughly cleans and disinfects the interior of the tooth, and seals it permanently to prevent reinfection. The tooth is then restored — typically with a crown — and continues to function normally for many years.
Signs You May Need a Root Canal
The need for root canal therapy is not always obvious — and in some cases, there are no symptoms at all until the infection has progressed significantly. That is one of the most important reasons to keep up with regular exams at our Clearwater office, where we can detect early signs of pulp damage through clinical evaluation and X-rays before symptoms become severe.
Common signs that root canal therapy may be needed include:

Is Root Canal Therapy Painful
This is the question we hear most often — and the answer is almost universally no. The discomfort patients associate with root canals is the pain caused by the infection itself, not the treatment. Root canal therapy relieves that pain by removing the source of the infection.
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and should feel no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled. Some patients experience mild soreness or sensitivity in the treated area for a few days following the procedure — this is completely normal as the surrounding tissue recovers from the inflammation and heals. Over-the-counter pain relievers are typically all that is needed to manage any post-procedure discomfort.
