Protect Your Smile Every Time You Compete
Whether you're playing youth soccer, high school football, adult recreational leagues, or competitive contact sports, your teeth are at risk every time you step onto the field. A single collision, fall, or errant elbow can result in a chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth — and dental injuries sustained during sports are among the most common and most preventable dental emergencies we see.
At Boulevard Dental in Clearwater, Dr. Jason Kopakin provides custom-fitted sports mouthguards for athletes of all ages. Our guards are made from precise impressions of your teeth, offering a level of protection, comfort, and fit that no store-bought option can match. Protecting your smile before an injury happens is always easier — and far less expensive — than repairing one after the fact.
Why Athletes Need a Mouthguard
- Chipped or fractured teeth
- Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth
- Cracked tooth roots
- Soft tissue lacerations to the lips, cheeks, and tongue
- Jaw fractures
- Concussions — mouthguards help absorb and distribute impact force away from the jaw and skull
Custom Sports Mouthguards for All Ages
- Youth Athletes — Children and teenagers are particularly at risk for sports-related dental injuries because their permanent teeth are still developing. Protecting those teeth now helps ensure a healthy, complete smile for life. Our team is experienced in working with younger patients and making the process quick and comfortable.
- Adult Athletes — Whether you play in a recreational league on weekends or compete at a higher level, your teeth are just as vulnerable. Adult athletes also have more to lose — restoring a damaged tooth in an adult requires more involved and costly treatment than in a developing child.
How We Create Your Custom Sports Mouthguard
-
Appointment 1 – Impression
Your Clearwater dentist takes accurate impressions of your upper teeth. These are sent to a dental lab where your mouthguard is custom fabricated to the exact contours of your smile. Turnaround is typically one to two weeks.
-
Appointment 2 – Fitting
When your mouthguard is ready, you'll return to our office for a quick fitting. We'll check that it seats correctly, feels comfortable, and allows you to breathe and speak naturally. Any minor adjustments are made before you leave.
Caring for Your Sports Mouthguard
- Rinse it with cool water before and after every use
- Clean it with a toothbrush and mild soap — avoid toothpaste, which can be abrasive
- Store it in the ventilated case provided to keep it clean and allow it to dry between uses
- Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources, which can warp the material
- Inspect it regularly for signs of wear, tears, or thinning and replace it when needed
- Bring it to your routine dental appointments so we can evaluate its condition
- Replace it if it no longer fits properly, particularly for growing children whose teeth and jaw are still changing
