Don't Ignore Your Gums — They're the Foundation of Your Smile
Healthy teeth depend on healthy gums. Periodontal disease — commonly known as gum disease — is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue and bone that supports your teeth, and it is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults. What makes it particularly dangerous is how quietly it progresses. In its early stages, gum disease rarely causes pain, and many patients are completely unaware they have it until significant damage has already occurred.
At Boulevard Dental in Clearwater, Dr. Jason Kopakin screens every patient for signs of gum disease at every routine visit. When gum disease is detected — at any stage — our Clearwater team provides effective, individualized treatment to stop its progression, restore gum health, and protect your teeth for the long term.
If your gums bleed when you brush, you've noticed persistent bad breath, or it has simply been a while since your last dental visit, now is the time to be seen.
What is Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by the buildup of bacterial plaque along and below the gumline. When plaque is not consistently removed through brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, it hardens into tartar — a substance that cannot be removed at home and that continuously irritates the surrounding gum tissue.
Over time, this bacterial presence triggers an immune response in the body that begins to break down the gum tissue and bone holding your teeth in place. As the disease progresses, the gums pull away from the teeth, forming pockets that harbor even more bacteria and accelerate the destruction of the supporting structures.
Warning Signs of Periodontal Disease
- Gums that bleed during brushing or flossing
- Red, swollen, or puffy gum tissue
- Gums that have pulled away from the teeth, making teeth appear longer
- Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth that doesn't improve with brushing
- Tooth sensitivity — particularly to temperature or pressure along the gumline
- Loose or shifting teeth
- Changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
- Painful or tender gums
- Pus between the teeth and gums

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Scaling and root planing is the gold standard non-surgical treatment for periodontitis. It goes well beyond a standard cleaning — targeting the bacterial deposits that have accumulated below the gumline on the root surfaces of the teeth.
During scaling, our Clearwater hygienist uses specialized instruments to carefully remove plaque and tartar from deep within the periodontal pockets. Root planing then smooths the root surfaces to eliminate rough areas where bacteria tend to cling and to promote reattachment of the gum tissue to the tooth. The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia for complete comfort and is often completed in two appointments — one side of the mouth at a time.
Following scaling and root planing, most patients experience a meaningful reduction in pocket depths as the gum tissue heals and tightens around the teeth. A follow-up evaluation is scheduled several weeks after treatment to assess the response and determine whether any additional care is needed. -
Periodontal Maintenance
Once periodontal disease has been treated, ongoing maintenance is essential. Patients with a history of gum disease typically require more frequent professional cleanings — usually every three to four months rather than the standard six — to keep bacterial levels in check and monitor pocket depths over time. These periodontal maintenance visits are a critical part of keeping gum disease from progressing or returning. -
Antibiotic Therapy
In some cases, localized antibiotic therapy may be used as an adjunct to scaling and root planing to target persistent bacterial infection within specific periodontal pockets. Our Clearwater dentists will determine whether antibiotic therapy is appropriate as part of your overall treatment plan. -
Gum Disease Evaluation & Ongoing Monitoring
For patients in the early stages of gum disease or those at elevated risk, regular monitoring at our Clearwater office is an essential part of staying ahead of the condition. We measure periodontal pocket depths, assess bone levels through X-rays, and track any changes over time to catch progression early and adjust your care plan as needed.
